Meet John: Our Groovy Adventurer

John joined the Howard Tech Team in early 2018 and quickly became acclimated. He is passionate about outdoor activities, spending time with his kids, technology, and water – his favorite beverage. Learn more about our laid back tech guru here.

What is the most exciting part of your job at Howard Tech?

The constant variety of issues and environments that we are required to work with on a daily basis keeps things from ever getting dull.

What accomplishments are you most proud of – personally or professionally?

Raising two wonderful children that are fun, bright and inquisitive. For example, my son told his teacher that I am 21 since that is “old.”

What causes, organizations or community events are you passionate about?

Amnesty International, Epilepsy support/research and Mental Illness awareness and treatment.

Some of John’s favorite things include:

Of course my kids. Canoeing, hiking, playing drums, and recording in my home studio. I am Nebraska Cornhuskers fan. I like the The IT Crowd. One of my favorite books is the Ender’s Game.

What would you like to accomplish this year?

Spend an extended weekend canoe-camping without any access to technology and no cell towers in sight. Long term, I would like to take night classes to finish my college degree. I’d also like to learn how to hang glide.

If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do?

Take my family on vacation and sleep, not necessarily in that order.

What was the last experience that made you a stronger person?

A near death experience helped me not stress out over all of the little things life like I used to.

What is something you learned recently?

Raising a teenager requires an infinite amount of patience and despite how many times they roll their eyes at you, they actually don’t get stuck that way.

What chore do you absolutely hate doing?

Cleaning a litter box. I put in a cat door and never had to do it again. As an added benefit, our bushes bloom more beautifully every year.

Three things on your desk…

Photos of my son and daughter. Water bottle. A cardboard cutouts from Seth’s box of “Sweetened Wheatfuls” cereal box.

If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be?

Robyn Hitchcock, the English musician. He always spins endlessly amusing improvised tales at his live concerts (check out the Jonathan Demi film about him for a small sample).  I imagine he could keep a dinner party entertained endlessly!

A favorite family tradition is…

I am the youngest of nine so we used to draw names on Thanksgiving for Christmas gift giving in my family when we were younger.  It would have been near impossible to get everyone a present.  Now our children carry on the tradition with their cousins.

Something that not a lot of people know about me…

I have six toes on my left foot! – just kidding. My nickname in high school (and beyond) was Gumby due to the inordinate amount of John’s in my class and a small collection of Gumby skate/surf t-shirts I had at the time.
