Meet Manny: HTA’s DIY Service Engineer

Manny-300x298Meet Manny. He is Howard Tech Advisor’s Service Manager. He is coming up on his 3-year work anniversary and when you talk to him, you quickly realize he is as genuine as they come. As leader of the remote support team, Manny is passionate about helping others, building relationships, and all things computer-related. He was born and raised in Columbia, Maryland and was fascinated with computers at a very young age. He left his previous company after 13 years, where he met his wife Michelle, because upon meeting the HTA Team he felt “like it was [his] calling. [He] could not pass up the opportunity to use his skills to give back to his community.” Here is some info you may not know about Manny…

I wrote my first computer program when…

I was 8 years old. By the time I was 13-years old I had built my first computer. I put together an entire web server in one week in my parent’s basement – mannyman.com. I still own the domain. [Laughter] I just need to figure out what to do with it. Anyways, once everyone found about my computer skills, I worked on my family and friends’ computers on the weekends. At this time, my church Bethany Lane Baptist Church, took me in to manage their computer network. It gave me a platform to learn network management and best practices at a young age. I still help them in my free time.

A gadget I could not live without is…

My video games. My original dream job was to develop Nintendo games. I have the original Nintendo system and am an avid video game collector. One of my all time favorite games is Chrono Trigger for Super Nintendo. My screensaver plays actual Nintendo games right in front of you. You can click on them and jump right in and start playing. It’s awesome!

But the first device I reach for in the morning…

Is my phone to check my email. My clients and their systems are just as important to them as they are to me.

One survival technique I have…

Is saving money. I am very frugal. One of my proudest accomplishments is that I was able to buy my first home at the age of 26-years old. I started saving when I was 20 years old. Since then, I have invested my own blood, sweat, tears (and money) in to my home. Actually, I should give some credit to my wife, Michelle, and her father. We have completely renovated our basement, powder room, hardwood floors on the main level, kitchen, and are now working on a bar. (Note: All of Manny’s photos are of Michelle cutting and riveting wood.)

Future goals include…

I would really like to get involved in helping and mentoring youth by showing them how important it is to make responsible decisions. It would be great to help guide them and show them how to get their career started. If they are interested in computers, business, technology and helping others, that would be a bonus!

Three things on my desk…

  • My Dell docking station, which I love;
  • Pictures of my wife, family, closest friends; and
  • A picture of Handy Manny, a Disney cartoon which my wife gave me as a joke years ago.

My music playlist…

Is incredibly diverse. I love the classics – Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson. I also love the obscure, like Final Fantasy performed by an orchestra. I saw the BSO (Baltimore Symphony Orchestra) perform “Distant Worlds: Music from Final Fantasy.” with my wife last year. It was amazing! I’m also a fan of Babyface. The only music that I have not indulged in is country. Although I heard Kacey Musgraves cover “Crazy” by Gnarls Barkley on a Spotify playlist. Next thing I know, I was bobbing my head to a banjo.

Three people who have inspired me…

My dad taught me the definition of work ethic and showed me what being a Provider truly means. I don’t think I have met anyone who has worked harder than him to provide for his family. He also tinkered with computers and electronics when I was growing up, so I got an early start by working with him on some of his projects.

My mom has incredible patience and loves people regardless of their circumstances. She always looks for the good in people. Growing up, she also taught me to stay focused on my goals.

My sister has excelled in pretty much everything she has ever done. She previously worked at NASA, was the first African American to get a doctorate’s in Physics in the state of Colorado, and is currently a tenured professor at Carleton College in Minnesota.

Other things I am passionate about…

My Ravens! I go to most home games and am currently on a long waiting list for PSLs. Michelle and I are going to London in September to watch them take on the Jaguars at Wembley Stadium. Traveling overseas? Now that’s devotion! I also enjoy playing football and basketball.

My cats – Cat, Tommy, and Levi. Yes, I have a cat named “Cat.” We also adopted Miranda, a mixed breed dog, from Puerto Rico through the Lucky Dog Animal Rescue.

I am a big foodie! My favorite breakfast spot is Duesenberg’s Deli. Although a close runner up is Miss Shirley’s Cafe. We just ate there a few weeks ago. If you ask my friends, they would tell you I am the “Wing Connoisseur.” No matter where we are, what time it is, or how full I am, I will never pass on ordering wings. Right now, my favorite wings are the Yard Bird wings from Looney’s Pub.
