Meet Jason: Our Microsoft Pit Master

Although Jason is young, he has already had a long career in IT starting while at UMBC. He has worked for himself, for large corporations, started his own 3-person company, and has now comfortably found his “home” at Howard Tech. He has been our Microsoft Evangelist since November 2014 and we are so thankful to have him on our team. While you may not meet him unless you visit our office, which you are more than welcome to, he helps keep us and our clients connected to one another. Learn a little bit more about Jason here.

I am excited to come to work everyday because…

There is always something new to learn, especially in the realm of Microsoft Office 365 and Azure. I like being able to share all the new features with my team, coworkers, and our clients. Hopefully I am helping them work smarter with their everyday tasks.

My family is…

Number one. I’ve been married to Jessica for 5 years and we have a 3-year old daughter, Evie. We also have a 10-year old Dachshund named Miles. Something very few people know about me and my wife is that we were married on the field of the Ravens stadium, M&T Bank Stadium. My brother works for the Ravens and was able to arrange for us to get married during an away game. It was an incredible day. We were married on a riser on the field, while the guests sat in the stands. Instead of walking down the aisle, my wife and father-in-law walked down the tunnel together. The Ravens were playing at Seattle that evening so after the ceremony, we celebrated in a Club Level lounge with the game on in the background. All of the food was football-themed, including a buffalo wing bar. All of our guests received customized foam fingers with our names on them.

I am pretty proud of…

Being featured on Microsoft’s website. I was in the Microsoft MVP program for a couple of years, based on my contribution to the community in the Microsoft Dynamics family of products. I got to attend the MVP Summit at Microsoft’s headquarters in Redmond, WA. For a period of time, my picture and a link to my blog were featured on Microsoft.com, just two clicks in from the homepage.

In the near future, I’d like to…

Brush up on my Microsoft certifications, specifically for Azure. Azure is Microsoft’s globally distributed cloud datacenter. In the very near future, we won’t always be building physical servers for our clients, we’ll be building virtual servers and virtual networks hosted in the Azure cloud.

When I’m not brushing up on Microsoft products, you can find me…

Tending to the grill or smoker. Most weekends, I am making pulled pork, brisket, ribs, etc. Although my favorite thing to make right now is smoked, bacon-wrapped jalapeños stuffed with cheese and buffalo sauce, also known as Atomic Buffalo Turds (seriously, Google it). I also enjoy playing video games, Fantasy Football, playing drums, and new gadgets.

Right now my favorite gadget is…

My Amazon Echo. I’ve been building out a voice-controlled living room with it. I can tell Alexa to do things like “Turn the lamp off,” “Turn the ceiling fan on,” “Set the temperature to 78 degrees,” “Turn the TV on,” “Play Xbox.”

I admit…

Though I am a Microsoft fan, I could not live without my iPhone. My most used app is Twitter. I don’t use it to tweet as much as I use it as a news reader. I can customize my feed for what’s relevant to me – Microsoft, tech trends, news, and sports, of course.

Some of my favorites are…

I don’t get to watch too much TV outside of Disney Channel or Nick Jr. but I do watch my favorite show – Game of Thrones. I have been watching since the first season. It has always been a great show, but the current season (season 7) is really incredible. All of the story lines are finally starting to come together.

I’m also a Star Wars nerd. I can remember seeing the Empire Strikes Back in the drive-in theater with my parents when it came out in 1980.

While I’ve had many different “favorite bands” that seem to come and go for various reasons, the one that’s always been a constant is Rush. Rush has been near and dear to my heart since high school. Playing drums in high school pretty much requires that you are a fan of Neil Peart, the greatest drummer of all time.

People who inspire me are…

Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, and others who have been incredibly successful and give back a majority of their wealth to help improve the lives of others. Both Gates and Buffett have helped people that are really suffering around the world in terms of health, hunger, poverty and education.
